Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chávez of El Salvador told ABC News that the upcoming conclave is expected to be brief, as the Vatican appears to be seeking someone closely aligned with the late pontiff’s vision—essentially a “Francis 2.”
Preparations for the conclave are underway in Vatican City, including the installation of the iconic smoke chimney atop the Sistine Chapel. This chimney will signal to the public whether a new pope has been elected.
Throughout his papacy, Francis often used his position to address global political issues. He condemned the violence in Gaza and was a vocal critic of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies. In a letter, Francis acknowledged countries' rights to protect their borders, but stressed that deporting vulnerable migrants undermines human dignity.
Even in death, Francis’ influence was felt. During his memorial service, a cardinal echoed his opposition to Trump’s policies while the former president sat in attendance. “‘Build bridges, not walls,’ was a message he often repeated,” the cardinal said.
ABC News reported that 133 cardinals—108 of whom were appointed by Pope Francis—will participate in the upcoming conclave, marking the largest number of papal electors in history.
